Every year, the National Junior Santa Gertrudis Association (NJSGA) elects a queen to represent the breed association. In 2021, Celeste High School’s own Madisyn Douglas earned the title. Recently, she performed her duties as queen for the first time on September 12th, working the ring and doing interviews.
Throughout her time showing cattle, Madisyn has frequently traveled as far as Illinois to show her cattle. When asked, Madisyn stated that her favorite place she has traveled while showing was Destin, Florida.
Santa Gertrudis cattle are bred to thrive in Texas, and Madisyn has been showing these animals for her whole life. Although she has also shown hogs, chickens, and lambs, Madisyn has flourished within the Santa Gertrudis breed.
The process of obtaining the title of Santa Gertrudis Queen was rigorous. Madisyn had to do two interviews, multiple rounds of voting, and present a speech to a room of more than 500 people. Her competitors came from all across the southern united states, making this a huge victory. She will continue to hold this position until next June, when a new monarch will be elected. Until then she will continue to make her family and community proud and help lead the NJSGA.
Ag Science teacher, Stephen Dillard, stated that, “Holding this office is a great accomplishment for Madisyn. No doubt, she will be very busy traveling, working shows and working in booths to advocate for the Santa Gertrudis breed as well as agriculture in general. She truly should be commended for her dedication and commitment to this endeavor.”
